The CoED-CF uses a combination of gravity and chemotaxis to select immune cells from heterogenous tissues in Niche 1 to the activation chamber in Niche 2. In Niche 2 cells are activated and change their chemokine receptor profile. Cell in Niche 2 then migrate into Niche 3 where they can be collected.

Chemotaxis is the process that many immune cells, including T cells, Neutrophils and NK cells, use to migrate from the blood stream, across the endothelial wall and intoa specific tissue. It is used by our body to make sure that the correct cells get to the correct tissue to carry out their effector functions such as killing bacteria at the site of a cut.
